The Isabela State University (ISU) – Echague Campus, Office of the Student Affairs and Services, in collaboration with the Guidance and Counseling department, conducted a Psychological First Aid Training titled “Nurturing Resilience and Well-Being Among Students” on January 11, 2024, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at ISU De Venecia Hall. Selected students from all college departments were required to attend. This program aimed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to navigate challenges and promote their mental well-being. Recognizing the increasing demands and pressures faced by students, the training sought to provide them with tools for self-care, coping mechanisms, and resilience building.

Ms. Roan B. Antonio, RGC, from the ISU San Mariano Campus Guidance, presented their campus’s Peer Facilitator Students’ Organization. She shared the organization’s foundation and the activities they have accomplished so far, highlighting that our campus would also establish a similar organization.

Meanwhile, Ms. Margie P. Vinasoy, RGC, RPSY, from ISU Cabagan, discussed the topic “Navigating Distress with Compassion: Psychological First Aid (PFA) Training.” She tackled the Mental Health Care Act of 2018, the Principles of PFA, and the Psychological Triage, among other topics.

Overall, the sessions covered a range of topics, including:

●         Understanding Mental Health:

○         Defining mental health and its importance in overall well-being.

○         Recognizing common mental health challenges faced by students.

●         Psychological First Aid:

○         Principles and guidelines for providing basic psychological support.

○         Active listening and communication skills.

○         Self-care strategies and coping mechanisms.

●         Building Resilience:

○         Identifying and developing personal strengths and resources.

○         Cultivating a positive mindset and fostering emotional well-being.

The seminar also conducted several interactive activities aimed at enhancing participant engagement and understanding. These included group discussions, team building, and individual reflection exercises. This interactive approach allowed participants to practice the learned skills and apply them to real-life situations. It also helped them exercise their social skills and apply problem-solving skills to each task given.

The Psychological First Aid Training successfully provided students with valuable knowledge and skills to manage their mental health and build resilience. The program ended with the election of student officers to lead the Peer Facilitator Student Organization (PFSO) of ISU E campus which aims to initiate programs and projects regarding on strengthening psychological or the mental health of each student. Ms. Krizza Mae Maldecir from BSN 1-2 was elected as the Secretary and Ms. Najel Kim D. Lovino was appointed as the College of Nursing’s Representative.

Thus, this campus remains committed to providing ongoing support and resources to ensure the well-being of the student community. This training program served as a significant step in promoting mental health awareness and equipping students with essential tools for self-care and resilience.
