Marking the transition of student nurses from the academic setting to the clinical field, the College of Nursing (CON) held its traditional 12th Capping, Pinning, and Candle Lighting Ceremony at the University Amphitheater, November 10.
177 sophomore students received their caps and pins which signifies their acceptance of the responsibilities of a student nurse and commitment to uphold the ethics and values centered around the clinical field.
Dr. Jose P. Gallena, the Cluster Executive Officer, in his words of welcome, honored the sacrifices of the studentsโ parents and guardians as their children reached this stage of their nursing journey.
โTo the parents and guardians of the candidates for the capping and pinning ceremony, I extend my heartfelt congratulations. Your sacrifices and dedication to supporting your sons and daughters in their pursuit of excellence,โ Gallena exclaimed.
Meanwhile, Guest Speaker Kelvin Almay G. Castillo, RN, MSN, EMT, MANc underscored the importance and weight of the caps and pins the students received.
โToday, as your cap is placed upon your head, remember that it isn’t just a piece of fabric. It signifies your destined profession where every action, every decision holds a potential to impact lives. Each pin tells a story, late night study sessions, overcoming challenges, and sacrifices of your instructors, guardians and parents that made you reach this point. Wear it proudly not as an accessory but a symbol of the profession and dedication that resides within you. And now the candle lighting ceremony, a moment of profound symbolism,โ Castillo mentioned in his address.
Edmelyn Cacayan, MSN, RN, the college dean, said that this event constitutes a rite of passage for second-year nursing students in an actual hospital field.
“The capping, pinning, and candle lighting ceremony is the beginning of every student nurses’ journey. Which symbolizes the beginning of your socialization into the nursing profession. It is an annual celebration for second year student nurses to signify that you accept the challenges of the nursing profession and are now ready to enter the actual hospital setting,โ the CON Dean stated in his closing remarks.
Also gracing the event are Prof. Ricmar Aquino, Ph.D, the University president represented by Prof. Boyet L. Batang, Ph.D, and the Faculty and Staff of the college.
The said ceremony is tied to the universityโs continuing endeavors to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) namely SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4 Quality Education, and SDG 17 Partnership for goals.
